Does New Filament Need to Be Dried Before Printing?

A sealed new spool is not automatically dry—and it is not automatically wet. Here’s how to decide whether drying is worth doing.

No pre-dry instruction, packaging is intact, and the first extrusion is clean and quiet.

Dry first

The exact product requires it, the material is highly moisture-sensitive, or strong moisture clues appear immediately.

DIAGNOSTIC RULE

Packaging is not a moisture measurement

Factory sealing lowers exposure risk but does not prove every spool is at an ideal moisture state. At the same time, opening a new spool does not justify automatic drying if it prints cleanly and the manufacturer does not require it.

Check exact-product handling instructions.

Listen and inspect extrusion before changing anything.

03 · PRINT

Run a simple known-good model/profile.

04 · ACT

Dry only if instructions or evidence justify it.

Do not create a problem while trying to prevent one.

If a new spool prints cleanly, record what works and store it properly. Drying should solve a documented requirement or a supported moisture hypothesis.
