Is moisture actually the problem?

This is a diagnostic heuristic, not a moisture measurement. One symptom alone never proves that filament is wet.

Keep printer settings unchanged while you use the checker. The goal is to decide whether drying deserves the next test—not to blame moisture automatically.
How the checker thinks
Strong clues
Repeated popping or crackling, bubbling or rough extrusion, credible humidity exposure and gradual decline with the same print profile make moisture more plausible.
Weak clues
Stringing by itself is not enough. Temperature, retraction, travel behavior and nozzle condition can produce the same symptom.
Contradicting clues
Good sealed storage or a problem that started immediately after a hardware or slicer change should push you toward those alternative causes first.

Stringing alone is not a moisture diagnosis.
Prusa notes that some filaments are naturally stringier than others. Polymaker’s current PETG guidance also points users toward drying when excessive stringing appears, then toward nozzle temperature and retraction/travel tuning if stringing remains.
Evidence behind the checker
Prusa identifies poor surface quality as a common first moisture signal and says high water content can cause low layer adhesion, blobs, bubbling and smoke during extrusion. Polymaker’s current PETG documentation specifically says popping/cracking is a reason to dry the filament.
