🧵 Stringing

Thin hairs between travel moves. Moisture is possible, but temperature and retraction remain common alternatives.

SOUND PATH

💥 Popping / crackling

Repeated pops become a stronger moisture clue when they line up with bubbly or visibly disturbed extrusion.

MOISTURE PATH

💧 Suspected wet filament

Combine exposure history, sound, extrusion quality and a controlled before/after drying test.

MATERIAL PATH

🧪 PETG stringing

PETG needs its own path because moisture, melt temperature and retraction can produce very similar symptoms.

FAST TRIAGE

Moisture, settings or something else?

I hear popping AND see rough or bubbly extrusion

Moisture becomes more plausible, especially with credible humidity exposure. Confirm the exact material and compare against the wet-filament checklist before drying.

I only have stringing

Do not assume moisture. Temperature, retraction and travel behavior are still strong alternatives unless other moisture clues appear.

The same profile used to print well, then quality slowly got worse

That history makes filament condition worth investigating, particularly after time outside controlled storage. Keep the same G-code for a before/after comparison.
